Diamond Necklaces - Real or Simulant

Diamond is the hardest known metal in the world. It is also one of two known forms of carbon useful for jewelry and industrial applications. The other mineral form of pure carbon is known as graphite. Diamonds have very impressive physical qualities. They are so strong that only another diamond can cut them

Difference Between a True Diamond and False Diamond

With the increased demand in diamonds, some necklaces can either be made of real diamonds or synthetic diamonds. A synthetic diamond is a true diamond in every sense and is created by a technological process while a diamond stimulant is made of non-diamond material created to simulate the appearance of a true diamond. This process has helped meet the demand for diamond necklaces. Producers of synthetic diamonds have begun to manufacture diamonds with better quality that it has begun to penetrate the market for diamond necklaces and the industry in general. Synthetic diamonds have been in the market for about fifty years now.

To date, expert gemologists with the proper equipment can distinguish necklaces made of natural diamonds from simulant and synthetic diamonds. It is but natural that the industry for real diamond necklaces maintains the distinction between the two that they have made some investments for the same purpose. However, with the improvements in the manufacturing technology and creation of new processes, it has certainly made it increasingly harder to differentiate the real diamond necklaces from the others.

The Rise of the Simulants

The gem quality of diamond necklaces is more dependent on industrial applications than on the properties of the material itself. This standard has created the environment for the imitation and invention of processes to increase the gemological properties of natural diamond necklaces such as the simulants. Most consumers are already familiar with cubic zirconia and moissanite. Both types are produced synthetically. They are advertised as diamond-like and are less costly than the real ones. With the strides made in this industry, most people fail to see the difference with real diamond necklaces compared to those made of simulants.

What are Diamond Enhancements?

After cutting and polishing natural diamonds into a gem, specific treatments called diamond enhancements are performed on it. These treatments include applying sealants to fill the cracks, laser drilling to take out inclusions, treatments to add fancy color to a white diamond and to enhance the color grade for white diamonds. After this, the mineral can then be used to create diamond necklaces.

To the general consumers, it is good to know these industrial processes done in relation to the manufacture of diamond necklaces. When purchasing such necklaces, consumers will want to make sure they are getting the right value for their money. Knowledge of facts on how the diamond industry is slowly being changed with improvements in technologies will help one decide on which types of diamond necklaces they want to grow their collection from. To the end user or recipients of diamond necklaces, expectations are high with regards to their value and one will of course want to provide only the best type there is.
